Mars 3.0 Arrives in Seattle!

Scott Maxwell came to Gnomedex today to give a speech/lecture on Mars 3.0. He came today to talk to the audience for help in the design of future space exploration. He want to know how Nasa can use the Internet to communicate with the public, and also to participate within in this “Grand Adventure”.

Here is a little Bio on Scott Maxwell according to Gnomedex:

“Scott Maxwell is the Mars Rover Driver Team Lead for the Mars Exploration Roverproject at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Since the twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity landed on Mars in January 2004, Scott and his team have guided the two plucky robots across nearly 20 kilometers of the surface of our neighbor planet. Four and a half years into their 90-day mission, both rovers are still active and continue to return science results from the Martian surface.

Scott works and has worked on a number of other JPL projects, including ATHLETE,PhoenixCassini, and the upcoming Mars Science Laboratory rover. He is also the author of the book Linux Core Kernel Commentary.”

He summarized about the past and how it is going to effect the future. He went back to ancient times pointing out how Julias Ceaser thought that Mars was a God. He then started discussing about legal, practical, and contractual restrictions. He then explained how they drive the current Mars Rovers, and no they don’t use a Joystick. It takes about 10 minutes for them to send a signal to the Rover, and 10 minutes for them to know what happened.

He went on talking about how Twitter is helping/helped within the Mars Mission, and how you can use Twitter to help.
