Five Ways To Make Your Post Titles More Attractive
The title of your post is the most important component in regards to gaining more overall attention to your website and encouraging community involvement. The title basically sums up what your article is about and is the major influence on a reader in deciding whether he/she wants to follow through reading the rest of the article. A good title on a post can make all the difference with the readers will to continue on with the article so it’s important to make sure that it’s designed correctly. Today I’m going to provide you guys with five unique ways in which you can best optimize your title for your readers and for search engines.
Keep Your Titles Short and To The Point
When you’re writing a title for your article your readers don’t want to read a whole paragraph, they just want a quick explanation to what the post is going to be about. When you’re developing a post title it’s important to keep it short and right to the point. Give your readers a brief explanation as to what your article is going to be about, such as what I’ve done with this title. As you can see, I bluntly stated that this post is going to be about how you can make your titles more attractive. I didn’t go over the top, however, I also didn’t keep any secrets as to the topic of the post. Sometimes it takes me longer than it took to wrote the post to come up with a good title. You want it to be fun and exciting, but make sure that you’re original thought is stated.
Ask a Question
Asking a question is not only an attractive way to get your readers to read the post, it’s also a way to encourage community involvement and commenting. Asking a question also shows that you’re unsure about the specific topic you’re talking about and that you’re simply asking your readers to talk about their thoughts and opinions. I’ve found by doing this I’ve increased RSS subscriptions substantially and also have had visitors stay for longer periods of time on my website.
Provide Incentives
Incentives are commonly used to get a reader to purchase a product, like an e-book or affiliate product. They’re also used to get people to subscribe to mailing lists and RSS feeds. Did you know that they can also get readers to read further into a post? If you provide some sort of “prize” for a reader upon clicking on your post it will not only make that title more attractive, it will also make the post as a whole more intriguing to the reader. An example of an incentive based title is “How To Get Free Stuff” or “Learn How To Generate a Larger Reader Base.” It’s almost like showing candy to the baby. If you tease a young infant with candy their probably going to do almost anything you ask them to do. The same goes for a blog post. Give your reader a reason to continue on reading the post.
Bring Up an Argument
Bringing up an argument is a great way to get attention. Confrontational titles, if used right, can really stir up some controversy and arguments. With that said, it’s important to be careful not to offend to many readers. If this happens it can have a horrible, not to mention a negative impact on your blog or your website. When you bring up an argument try to keep the title as unbiased as possible. Just merely state the thought or argument in which you’d like debated by your readers. Doing this will not only gain more attention for your website, it also gets the community involved.
Show an opinionated thought
By providing your opinion on a specific subject or thought shows your readers that you’re a professional. When you’re showing your opinion you’re giving a reason to readers to submit their own two cent argument. Although you may not like the reaction of your readers you have to remember that it’s for the better. Showing your opinion in your title is a superb way to grab attention from not only your regular readers, but new readers as well.
Nice tips Brad. I’m going to start writing titles with questions and others to start arguments.
These tips are perfect when writing comments in blogs with the plugin “comment luv”. In those blogs your post title is bait for new readers, so now, more than ever, it is important to write good titles.
