5 Reasons Why Comments Are Good For Your Blog

Commenting has been on blogs since they began. The reason for having commenting is to get the community involved. For example, a news organization would post a story and their readers would submit their reactions as a comment. This allows the news organization to get valuable opinions, plus they can create content that’s geared towards their audience. There are many reasons of why you should have commenting enabled on your website, here are just a few.

  • It brings diversity – Allowing people to post their opinions on your blog brings multiple views to a particular story. When you first write a post you’re trying to initiate conversation, then slowly readers begin to add their own opinions. This happens to be extremely useful to search traffic that comes to your website, as they’re receiving information from a variety of sources in just one post. Bringing diversity to your blog posts is a great way to gain the trust of the community, as it shows that you’re not cocky and are willing to accept controversy.
  • It provides linking – It’s been universally accepted that linking is what connects the Internet. Without links, search wouldn’t work as we know it today. When people comment on a blog they’re usually asked to leave their URL. This URL provides link juice to their blog. Again, this may not affect your website initially, but in the long run it will get you more trust from your readers. By encouraging people to comment on your blog you’re diversifying the amount of sites that are linked to your website.
  • It is visually attractive – For some reason, websites that get lots of comments give the impression of popularity. Although your site may not get tons of traffic, having substantial amounts of comment idea will engage new readers, keeping them on your site longer than if the comments weren’t there. This is important because by getting readers engaged you’re encouraging them to interact as well.
  • It brings keyword rich content to your blog – By allowing content from other readers to be posted on your blog you’re allowing different types of styled writing to be published. This is not only a good thing, it brings in keywords to your content that you might have not of used otherwise. As a writer, there are words that you use often and some you do not, meaning that the addition of this extra content will allow you to have more rich and valuable content. This is essential to maintaining high ranking in search engines.

However, there is a flip side to having comments allowed on your blog. For one, spam can easily begin to flow in and clog up your comment field. Additionally, there’s also the potential that your readers will just submit a pitch for their own website. It’s extremely important that if you do allow comments that you moderate them and make sure they’re appropriate to a particular topic. If you’re a WordPress user I recommend using Akismet to assist you in moderating your comments and filtering for spam.

All in all though, it’s important to keep the community involved. By allowing comments to be submitted you’re encouraging visitors to stay, potentially allowing a better chance for them to spend money on your product or click advertisements. However, don’t let it get out of hand and end up ruining your site’s reputation.
