As most of you know, i’ve recently received an Ipod Touch for my birthday. Along with this remarkable device comes the ap stores and the aps within the store. Well tonight will be my first post on a series of Iphone/Ipod Touch applications. Tonight we will take a look at the very Popular Touch Hockey FS5 application available for both the Iphone, and the Ipod Touch.

When you first download the application it gives the impression of bordum, and simplicity. After opening it for the first time though you notice a wonderful user interface with great touch screen response coming from Ipod itself. When you first open the game it shows an advertisement and asks you if you would like to continue to the sponsors website or go to the main menu of the application. Once at the menu of the Touch Hockey you will see 3 options including “Start Game”, “Resume Game” or settings.

Clicking on the Start game will lead you to an air hockey type surface. Your side will be the closest to the home screen button, with the red peg. Your opponent will be opposite to you with the blue peg. From there you will play a game to either 5, 7, 9, or 11 points(The Default is 7). Playing the game provides certain challenges that depend on the difficulty level. For Example: On the easy level the “computer” appears to be reluctant to shoot the air puck. The more you increase the game difficulty, the more speed and challange it brings. The game also provides an annoying instant replay addition. This can be sped up by just tapping on the Ipod’s screen.

A few glitches we noticed with the game is that in certain situations, the puck will get stuck under the peg. Although they say this is an advantage, we have found it rather annoying. This causes you to lift your finger from the ipod touch and place it differently on the playing surface. Doing this will remove the peg from the puck. When testing we attempted to put the computer in difficult situations. One situation showed that the computer has a difficult time getting the puck out of their defending corner, sometimes not able to at all. This unfortunately caused us to end the game, and restart. Another problem that we should point out is that the pocket(net) on the ends of the hockey table appeared smaller than they actually were. By this we mean that the puck in certain situations appeared to be going through the wall of the game and not directly into the net.

Overall the game provides a fun, an addicting atmosphere, and strategy. The graphics, and quality of the game were almost perfect, except for the glitches that i’ve pointed out above. If i were to rate this game it would be 4 1/2 stars out of 5.
